Tabular Object-Level Security

Object-level security was introduced in the launch of Tabular 2017. This feature allows you to hide tables and columns from the end user.

The ability to hide columns and tables is vital if you need to do something like allow a salesperson to see their total sales, but hide the cost of the sale, which would also exist in the sales fact. Another critical example would be to restrict access to tables or columns that contain PII to managers or HR. In fact, I do not know how you can make a Tabular model GDPR or CCPA compliant without this feature, unless you exclude all PII entirely.

There are hacky workarounds to get a similar effect with row-based security, but they only work with simple, small models. I think anyone who's building a serious enterprise solution with stringent compliance requirements is going to really want this feature.

This is definitely required to have GDPR compliant tabular models for broad use. Currently the lack of this functionality forces us to physically separate models for different audiences.

At this point we're even investigating the option to develop the semantic models outside of the discovery hub. That also has major drawbacks, but it does unlock a range of much desired functionality.

Hi Steven,
we are also checking the option to build the semantic layer inside/outside Discovery Hub.  Which desired functionalities do you actually miss in Discovery Hub ?

Best regards,

Peter

We too are having to contemplate developing semantic models outside of discovery hub because of this gap, which is a shame.

Hi,
we're implementing tabular models more frequently and the need to have object level security (role-based as in Multidim cubes) is a must.

When will this be implemented in Discovery Hub ?

Best regards,
Peter

Hi,

This feature really needs to be added to TimeXtender to make mature semantic models inside the application.

Best Regards,

Jasper

Hi,

I agree, this feature is very important to us because we use one large semantic model for the entire organization.

Best regards,

Roy

We have some customers in the need of this functionality as well. Would be great if support for OLS can be added!
